Super Size It !

Matthew Dickerson – E130223

In this day in age we run around unaware that we are influenced by all the fast food adds off the side of the highway and all the materialistic marketing that they are just eating us alive with. the general marketing approach has Americans completely blinded by appearance with nice things and what is popular or in the know, that we are killing ourselves in many different ways.

it does not matter what it is, people as a whole are over shadowed by are desire for nice things now that we have the ability to reach them, no matter what they are, fast food, jewelry, cars, either of these can be easily bought through credit. there are to many ways that we can get things to easily , and for that we feel the desire to need them even though it takes so much less for us to live and be happy, we consume ourselves into happiness with materialistic things.

more and more are economy grows, and we will think if things that were once hard to get or were made to have only a couple times a year, more are more desirable because we can have them whenever we want. we can buy a candy bar because we a re hungry , and not that long ago, candy was only for special occasions or to celebrate something, now we use it to help ourselves from being hungry in between meals or even just because we want one.

Americans continue to be overweight or become overweight because we work our busy lives around our desires and for that reason we drive to fast food restaurants to get food we know is bad for us. we are killing ourselves in a sense.

Americans spent 33 billion dollars in 1991 on diet plans, gym memberships and etc, but yet we continue to become overweight, some people will make the argument that it is easy for people to get diet supplements and continue to live there lives without change in diet or lifestyle, and then when the supplement fails to make them lose weight, it is easy for us to just blame the product and then continue on about our lives feeling better because we have something else to blame besides ourselves.

in a population perspective, we are going to grow into a very dysfunctional yet productive group because we are successful as people but yet we are unsuccessful with the way we continue to live our lives and are very susceptible to the little materialistic things. we will have to learn from mistakes to make changes and that will become the only solution.

  1. I agree with you that our society today is getting more and more overwieght but I would not blame the fast food restaurants or the marketing, I would put the blame more on how they were brought up and taught in the home and in school. It is the individual making their own choices knowing that it may not be good for them or that it cost to much (only exception is the parent providing for a young child) that get them in the situations that they are in. I think it is a lot harder with the easy availability of these quick service restaurants, but even they are starting to change their menus and offer healthier options. Everyone needs to look at their own situation and build budgets around what they need to buy and what they want to buy, again not giving in to try and keep up with what friends are getting because they may make more money and can afford the bigger house or nicer car.

  2. believe that obesity is getting out of control. Many times people are overweight because it their fault, but sometimes it is not. The reason it not some people fault that they are overweight is because the illness and medication. Certain medication may cause excessive weight gain. They are many sudden ways that people become overweight, such as some eating disorders, stress, etc. It could affect your life by causing diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
Nowadays, some people go to fast food restaurant than cook meals for themselves because fast food is quicker and easier. In ten minutes your meal is ready and don’t have to clean after yourself. Somehow, several people need to be careful and knows what they are eating. For my opinion, I blame people for them to be overweight. They know they most the fast food could cause many problems. If they eat fast food all the time, then they need to exercise for them to be healthy.

  4. So true, people now a days are consumed by materialistic things. Sayyid Qutb wrote about this in his book Milestones. He wrote that people are losing the moral and spiritual side of themselves to the materialistic world. People want things fast and things that are in there eyes good. Everyone knows fast food is unhealthy, but we all still eat it. Many people lack self control and self discipline, it is hard to control our inner desires when it comes to things we see and want or want to eat because it tastes good or looks good.

  5. . It is obvious that American society is not going to change anytime soon. America has got to be the country with the most amount of overwieight people and also the most consumers. I agree that advertisment influences our decision on what to buy and I also agree that it seems like people dont care about prices anymore because of credit. We rely on fast food because it takes less energy and time than cooking a meal ourselves. The article also mentions technology playing a part in using less energy, because it can produce more and cost less. Americans spend a lot of money on unnecessary material items. Credit has brought our country into debt and fast food and unhealthy decisions have brought Americans into obesity. I like how the last paragraph of the article emphasizes on how people choose how they spend their time and resources, and can make better decisions than in the past.
